2025 CSA Newsletter (Thursday Edition) Week 9
/How did we get to Week #9 already?! Whoa, that’s crazy! Didn’t we just start the CSAs last week?!
Apologies for missing the newsletter last week! We get to a point in the season that all hell breaks loose on the farm and everything is ready to be harvested all at once. Last week with corn hitting, it was all we could do to stay afloat! As we fell into bed Tuesday night, we realized we had forgotten to send the newsletter. But since lots of you forget to read the newsletter (LOL!), we figured you would understand! :)
The Missoulian published an article last week about our son Ethan and his cattle operation here in Missoula. He had a vision of how he wanted those cattle raised way back when he was a teenager. It’s been a joy to watch him create a pretty special thing here in Missoula with his cattle herd. Since you have to pay to see the article, we are adding pictures of the front page article for you to read.
The sunsets this time of year are spectacular!
As I mentioned, we are busy harvesting everything these days. One of our goals for many years has been to get an area completely harvested then cleaned out and prepper for the winter. We’ve gotten some little areas done but nothing in the big production areas. Last week, a couple of our interns, worked diligently to pull all the left over cauliflower plants which had already been harvested. They pulled back our fabric mulch and gently hand-hoed the ground to “fluff” it up then put down a special mix of cover crop that will feed the soil and keep it healthy! It’s so exciting to accomplish this goal especially during our busiest season!
Speaking of the harvest season, we are hosting a bulk produce/canning sale this weekend at the farm and along with it we will be offering Farm Tours followed by baby goat petting! This will be the last Farm Tour of the season and also the last of the baby goat visits as they will be weaned shortly and will rotate to another area away from their mamas. Below is a flyer with the details about Saturday!
Okay, let’s talk about your CSA bag today!
~Potatoes: Cute and tasty little red spuds.
~Corn: This corn is so good we are lucky to even get it in the house to cook it! We just eat it raw and it is SO good! We will have continue to have it in the farm store for the next couple of weeks. So if you need more, swing by!
~Tomatoes: It’s BLT season!! Or tomato salad or caprese salad season! Whatever you like, we have the tomatoes to meet your need! We just sheared the plants in our big hoophouse this morning. It exposes the tomatoes to the sun so they ripen faster. We were stunned at the amount of tomatoes on those plants! WOW!!
~Cucumbers: We barely can keep up with the harvest on these guys! They are going great guns! Throw a few slices in your water as a natural hydration aid!
~Lemon Cucumber: Our farmer friend Brandon grew these and gave them to us to share with folks! They are such a novelty crop! So fun looking and so tasty! Enjoy!
~Transparent Apples: These are from our trees. Transparents are a very early apple and they get you kinda excited about the upcoming apple season! They are a tender apple but work well tossed into a salad.
~Onion and garlic: You’ll need these for all the cooking you will be doing this week!
~Peppers: The yellow pepper is a gypsy pepper and is sweet! The others are a thai chili pepper which are spicy but perfect in your salsa or pico de gallo!
~Beet: A mix of golden and red! They make such a pretty side to your meal! Roast them up with some olive oil, salt and pepper! Or Farmer Jon just pops them in the air-fryer for 10-12 minutes and bam! they are ready!
Enjoy Week 9! And don’t forget your Meat Share if you are subscribed!
Also, remember to sign up for the Fall Share Program if you are interested in another 4 weeks of fresh produce! We sent the link to that sign-up out during Week 7. If you need the link, please reach out!
Have a super week and as always thank you so much for your support!
